Roof Ventilation and Insulation

Balanced Roof Ventilation

The importance of balanced roof ventilation is essential for maintaining your roof's appearance and functionality. Without proper ventilation, excessive heat and moisture can become trapped in the attic, leading to potential damage to your home. This can cause the shingles on the roof to dry out, split, or crack, and may result in nails popping up from the shingles.

We measure and calculate your Net Free Vent Area (NFVA) to ensure a balanced intake and exhaust roof ventilation system.

We offer a variety of soffit (intake) venting and roof (exhaust) ventilation systems that are smart, simple, and effective for any roof design.

Homeowners can enjoy numerous benefits from having proper roof ventilation paired with sufficient attic insulation:

- Protects against premature roof deterioration and leaks

- Minimizes moisture and helps prevent mold

- Aids in preventing ice dams

- Promotes energy efficiency

Attic Insulation

Attic insulation

Proper attic insulation is essential for protecting against ice damming, premature roof failure, and enhancing overall comfort in your home. By insulating and sealing small air gaps in the attic, you can significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce moisture levels, which helps prevent mildew and mold growth.

Before we recommend removing old insulation or adding additional layers to improve the R-Value, we thoroughly inspect your insulation for any signs of mildew or dampness.

We take great care to cover and protect your furniture, carpets, and floors. When removing old insulation, we dispose of all debris in seal-tight garbage bags while still in the attic before transporting it out of your home.

We ensure that any air gaps in the attic floors, ceilings, and around chimneys or soil pipes are properly sealed with fire-stop caulking.

We install Owens Corning EcoTouch Fiberglas Insulation with PureFiber Technology, available in both faced and unfaced preformed options. This insulation is Greenguard Gold Certified and validated to be formaldehyde-free, with 55% recycled content.

Rest assured, all electrical wires and light cans will not be covered with insulation, maintaining the manufacturer-recommended safe distance.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does attic insulation last?

Fiberglass and cellulose insulation can last 20–30 years, but may settle or lose effectiveness sooner.

Q: Will adding insulation really stop ice dams?

Yes, it’s a major factor. When combined with proper roof ventilation, insulation helps keep attic temperatures stable, reducing melt-refreeze cycles.

Q: Can I put new insulation on top of old?

Yes, as long as the old insulation is dry and in good condition.

What is R-Value?

R-Value is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power.

The Connection Between Insulation and Ventilation

Attic insulation and roof ventilation work hand-in-hand to ensure optimal energy efficiency. Insulation keeps heat where it belongs, while ventilation ensures proper airflow to prevent moisture buildup and ice dams.

Without adequate roof ventilation, insulation can trap moisture, leading to reduced effectiveness. Conversely, without sufficient attic insulation, ventilation alone won’t stop heat loss. Both elements are critical to maintaining the health of your roof.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much ventilation does my roof need?

Building codes usually recommend 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space, evenly split between intake and exhaust.

Q: Do I need ridge vents if I already have gable vents?

Ridge vents are more effective for enhancing roof ventilation, but a professional can evaluate the best system for your home.

Q: Can poor ventilation void my shingle warranty?

Yes. Many manufacturers require proper ventilation to ensure that your warranty remains valid.
