What is an ice dam?
The gutters and the overhang on your home will be the same temperature as the outside weather continually. Therefore the snow in the gutters and the overhang will melt depending on sunlight and warmer than 32 degrees days. The snow on the remainder of roof above the gutter/overhang has the attic underneath. If the attic is not ventilated properly or even more important the attic is not insulated properly, the warmth from heating goes up to the attic ceiling warming the snow and melting the snow at a much quicker rate than the gutters and overhang. The snow melted water runs into an iceberg and the water pools, moving back up the roof and under your shingles, saturating the roof decking and eventually through and into your home, creating a mini water fall.
