If the attic is not ventilated properly or even more important the attic is not insulated properly, the warmth from heating goes up to the attic ceiling warming the snow and melting the snow at a much quicker rate than the gutters and overhang. The snow melted water runs into an iceberg and the water pools, moving back up the roof and under your shingles, saturating the roof decking and eventually through and into your home, creating a mini water fall.
